Tennis Goes 2-0 Against JMU and Radford In Doubleheader Action

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of Missouri Tennis team grabbed the first two wins of the season against James Madison University (4-3) and Radford University (6-1) at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Tigers boosted their season record to 2-6 with this weekend’s play.

Mizzou opened the day against James Madison by snagging the doubles point with hard-fought wins from the doubles duos of seniors Gabriela Martinez and Romary Cardenas Rifka (7-6 (5)) and graduate student Emelie Schwarte and sophomore Andrea Artimedi (6-3).

Going into singles play, senior Mae Canete dominated her No. 1 singles match against Broerman and pulled away with the win (6-1, 6-2). Artimedi also walked away with a singles win in the six spot against Prudente where the sophomore battled through the tiebreak to grab the win (7-6 (5), 6-1). Schwarte pulled out with the win for the Tigers with her three-set victory (6-2, 3-6, 7-5) over Moulin, grabbing the fourth point that put Mizzou on top.

Continuing the momentum, the Tigers dominated doubles against Radford with a 3-0 sweep to grab the doubles point early in the competition. Mizzou closed out the day with five singles wins from M. Canete, Inah Canete, Martinez, Cardenas Rifka and Artimedi to end 6-1.

“Very positive day for the team. After a tough start to the season, these two wins will give us some confidence moving forward. Good team effort. Very gritty performance by Emelie to clinch the match against JMU. And the team took care of business against Radford. We are making progress, but we need to keep working even harder to get ready for the next weekend in Colorado and the start of the conference season.”

The Tigers are scheduled to hit the road to Fort Rollins, Colo., to face off against the Rams of Colorado State University on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1:30 p.m. CT and will continue the weekend’s contest against the Buffs of the University of Colorado on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. CT.
