Cowboy Tennis Picks Up Two Victories in Dominant Doubleheader

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men’s tennis claimed two victories Saturday, defeating Saint Louis and Oral Roberts in convincing fashion at Greenwood Tennis Center. 

The Cowboys first defeated Saint Louis, 7-0, not giving up a single set, then followed it up with another 7-0 victory over Oral Roberts.

Oklahoma State vs. Saint Louis – Match 1

The Cowboys handled Saint Louis in their first match of the day, winning every match in straight sets for the first time this season.

OSU cruised to a 1-0 lead after convincingly taking the doubles point.

It started with a dominant win on court two by Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile. They took down Saint Louis’ Andres Castellanos and Luca Lo Nardo in a 6-0 effort. 

Over on court one, OSU’s Ty Wunderlich made his college tennis debut, partnering with senior Tyler Zink to defeat Saint Louis’ Jonathan Sadowski and Theo Ortis, 6-3, and claim the doubles point.

Francisco Pini made his OSU doubles debut, teaming up with Leighton Allen to take on SLU’s Declan Townsend and Adam Behun. It was a close match but went unfinished at 5-4.

The Cowboys continued their success heading into singles, featuring two freshman debuts.

Back on court one, No. 18 Zink took down Ryota Fukushima in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to extend the lead to 2-0. Next on court two, Isaac Becroft continued his perfect season, improving to 4-0, this time winning against Townsend, 6-2, 6-0.

OSU clinched the match with a clean victory from Pini. In his first singles match in the fourth position, Pini defeated Ortis in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to claim the match. 

The Pokes didn’t quit even with the match in hand. Alessio Basile handled Lo Nardo, winning 6-2, 7-5. 

On court five, freshman Goran Zgola made his collegiate debut in dominating fashion. Zgola won a close first set, 6-3, against Behun, then closed Behun out with a 6-1 second set. 

Wunderlich also made his collegiate debut in singles. Wunderlich played a close first set, going to a tiebreaker and pulling it out. The second set was more of the same, winning the match, 7-6(3), 6-2.

Oklahoma State vs. Oral Roberts – Match 2

In primetime, Oklahoma State walked away with another convincing victory, this time against Oral Roberts.

The match started with another doubles point going to the Pokes. 

Basile and Becroft did it again on court two, winning handily over ORU’s Eli Brewer and Aaron Brewer, 6-2. Allen and Pini played a close match and came out on top over Cayden Cheek and Ryan Holloway, 6-4, to clinch the doubles point.

Zgola got his first doubles experience at OSU, partnering with Zink. They played a competitive match with ORU’s Gustavo Pinho and Ricardo Filho but went unfinished at 5-4.

The domination continued into the singles competition as the Cowboys didn’t lose a set again.

Zink finished first on court one, taking down Pinho, 6-1, 6-1. Just next to him on court two, Becroft moved to 5-0 on the season with a decisive win over Filho, 6-1, 6-0.

Zgola continued to shine on his first day of collegiate tennis as he clinched the match for the Cowboys with a commanding 6-0, 6-4 victory over Aaron Brewer.

Another match was clinched, but the Pokes kept the pressure on, going on to win the next three points.

Pini took on ORU’s Eli Brewer and came out on top, 6-1, 6-3, and Wunderlich won his second singles match of the day, this time defeating Ryan Holloway, 6-4, 6-2.

Leighton Allen was the last Cowboy to claim his point, taking down Cayden Cheek in a decisive, 6-1, 7-6(2), match to give OSU the 7-0 victory over Oral Roberts.

The Cowboys will look to build on the doubleheader victory at Greenwood Tennis Center next weekend as they take on USC on Saturday and Princeton on Sunday.
